The telecommunications companies of the Brazilian group AES (AES Com Rio and AES Eletropaulo Telecom) are expanding their backbone to Volta Redonda (Rio de Janeiro) and increasing their capillarity in the cities of Barueri and Cotia (Sao Paulo). Altogether, the extent of the fibre-optic network of the company, which focuses on the states of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, has more than 5000 km. The network capacity is currently 446 Mbps. In parallel, the company bets on growth in demand for capacity on Metro Ethernet networks by the mobile operators, especially for the backhaul of 3G coverage. Last year, this technology accounted for 19% of the total turnover of the companies and should increase the share in 2010.
